San Francisco Columbarium
Richmond District

415.752.7891
This four-story neoclassical cemetery structure is located underneath some undoubtedly spooked out residents in the Richmond District. Built in 1898, the Columbarium stores "thousands of urns filled with burial ashes from some of the area's finest families." It was originally created for the Odd Fellows Cemetery, and incredibly, it survived the 1906 earthquake and a 1937 city ordinance that banned cemeteries in San Francisco. Now almost fully restored after "lying dormant, complete with mushrooms and raccoons, until 1979," the building's marble floors, stained-glass windows, and ceiling mosaics are certainly worth a visit. Our SF editors had no idea that this secret, underground spot even existed. Read more.

Taqueria Cancun
Mission District

415.252.9560
Not only does Taqueria Cancun serve up what locals rave as "undeniably the best burritos in San Francisco," but it also specializes in tostadas, tacos, quesadillas, and more. "Considering that SF might just have the best Mexi-Cali burritos in the whole state, that's saying a lot." From one bite, you'll know that "the ingredients are impeccably fresh." The food's so tasty and the "carne asada is so succulent, you'll even consider eating the pieces you've accidentally dropped out of your burrito onto the floor." Expect to find motley crowds "ranging from families to faux-hawked cool kids to Mission district tattoo artists." They don't put rice in the burritos, as policy, but that just means more meat! (There are three locations, but the one in the Mission was voted tops.)

Stern Grove Festival
Sunset/Parkside District

415.252.6252
The Stern Grove Festival is a fixture in San Francisco. Every summer since 1938, the 33-acre public park with a beautiful, natural amphitheater hosts an admission-free performing arts series. Set amidst "mighty redwoods, some eucalyptus," and "oftentimes the SF fog," the park encompasses "mobs of natives picnicking and socializing." A word of advice: Make sure you "get there early to beat the crowds and reserve a picnic table in advance!" Plus the website features a handy online 'survival guide' for first-timers. Read more.

Tartine Bakery
Mission District

415.487.2600
In the heart of what's being dubbed "the new, gourmet ghetto," Tartine is acclaimed as "the best bakery in the city." Locals gushed to us about the exquisitely-made, "to-die-for morning buns," the "flaky, almond croissants," and the "cheesy croquet monsieur." Usually this corner bakery is mobbed by hungry hipsters and "an empty table might be hard to find," so grab your goodies and head a block to Dolores Park--"a great green spot to eat and people watch." Film Night in the Park
Various locations

415.465.3456
From May to October, you can "spread out a blanket and enjoy your favorite bottle of wine" at one of three San Francisco parks. Union Square, Dolores Park in the Mission, and Washington Square Park in North Beach all host Film Night in the Park, which is a free event that's "like a drive-in without the cars," complete with popcorn and other theater concessions. "The settings are truly San Francisco with gorgeous views of the city." Insider tip: Don't forget your jacket and a thermos of hot chocolate--Mark Twain wasn't the only one who found SF summer nights to be cool. Read more.
