Get in on the Secret

Aquidneck Lobster
Bowen’s Wharf

401.846.0106
At the "very end of Bowen’s Wharf," this "off-beat place" allows you to get a glimpse of "lobsters and seafood as they come fresh from the boats." They are then placed "into large holding bins that are pumped with salt water." Visitors can "buy fresh lobsters of any size and the local owners will pack them in ice, wrap them in newspaper, and then plastic bag them," a method that keeps everything extra fresh, even if you have a long drive. They only take checks or cash, so "even if you don’t buy lobsters," it is "well worth the visit" to see into a true seaman’s world.

Crazy Burger Café and Juice Bar
Narragansett

401.783.1810
When you hear the word burger, you don’t automatically think vegetarian, but this place truly specializes in the art of the "made from scratch" veggie burger. And lest you meat eaters worry, you’ll find the standard burgers here, too. Food always comes out of the kitchen "fast," so often you’ll find hungry surfers after a day on the coast. The "relaxed and friendly" atmosphere is sweetened by a "huge selection of shakes and smoothies," plus, even though there’s a lot of "health-food," there’s the sinfully good "fried ice cream for dessert." Seven Stars Bakery
Providence

401.521.2200
Only three years old, this bakery next to the bank already produces the "best croissants in town." Everything is handmade each day from scratch, and the commitment to quality extends to no added fats or sugars and the use of only unbleached flours. Cooked in a Spanish-style hearth oven, the "bread is fantastic without being too pricey," plus there is a huge and decadent assortment of pastries. Coffee fans will also be coddled. In particular, the ice coffee is "amazing because they freeze the leftover coffee to use as ice cubes." Read more.

Things Made Wonderful
Foster

401.647.7555
If you’re up for a "scenic country drive," you’ll "stumble upon this wonderful country/primitive store," which will become a favorite as "soon as you walk through the door." The staff and handmade décor are "warming and inviting," and every day there’s something different according to which dealers decide to rent space in the building. Usually, you’ll find a "nice mixture of primitive handmade crafts, antiques, and other country items" like berry garlands and sheep’s wool placemats. There is also an assortment of "made in Rhode Island" souvenirs to bring back from the Ocean State. Read more.

The Three Sisters
Block Island

401.466.9661
Would you like the "twisted sister" or the "hippie sister"? Both are on the menu at this creative sandwich shop shaded by maple trees, where hammocks, tables, and chairs invite you to "dine among the wildflowers." The food is served in little beach pails or sand buckets and is "well worth the wait." And the wait is even welcome in the backyard where the "birds and the bees buzz and everything seems like pure bliss." When you’re done with your food, it’s easy to "hop on your bike and ride back to the beach."
