The Philly culinary scene is more than cheese steak, as you'll see once a year when the "oldest outdoor market in the country" decides to throw itself and visitors a party celebrating the "flavor of Philly's culture and Italian heritage." Amid "an eclectic crowd of market-goers," many in attendance bring the whole family to enjoy music, food, and entertainment. In 2006, for example, Frankie Avalon headlined, and the goodies available for purchase included fresh produce, Italian meats and cheese, pastries, and more. (Dates: May 17-18, 2008) Read more.

Forry's Oleona Country Store
Cross Fork

Before big-box retailers and strip malls took over the northeast, one might imagine that this "country store located on a family home" was how it all used to be. Owned and run by a "plain" Brethren family (similar to Amish or Mennonite), all of the locals know "that this is the place to shop for the freshest and best deals." From "deli meats, cheeses, and bulk foods to local produce and grocery items the store offers a little bit of everything." And if you plan to do some fishing, you can even stop in here to get your license and live bait.

Marrakesh Restaurant
Philadelphia
215.925.5929
For a way to experience the flavors of Morocco without traveling across the Atlantic, head to Marrakesh, which, for "about $20 a person will transport you to another place." Located off of touristy South Street "in a tiny alley," you have to "knock on the door of this unassuming little row house" to gain entry to an "unfamiliar but welcoming" atmosphere. Once inside and enjoying your seven-course meal, you'll find that "the staff is so friendly and the food is absolutely incredible." After trying it out, "many guests ask to go back."
7 Tubs Nature Area Trail
Plains
717.477.5467
Cavort with chipmunks and hummingbirds in this "wooded area that has a large reservoir running through the mountainside." Maintained by the Audubon Society, the trailhead has parking and easy access from several highways. Best part of all, it's absolutely free, and has something new to offer in every season from summer swimming and "winter snows" to "magnificent fall leaves" and "spring green coming out of its deep winter sleep." The tubs themselves were naturally carved during the last ice age. Today, you'll find convenient grills for cooking up burgers after a hike. Read more.
