Hull-Chelsea-Wakefield Steam Train
Gatineau, QC

800.871.7246
Somehow, a 100-year-old Swedish steam engine feels right at home in Canada's Gatineau Hills, (slowly) whisking riders on unforgettable excursions from Gatineau to quaint Wakefield and back. One of the most popular rides is the Sunset Dinner Train, where "magnificent views of the river" compete only with the "excellent food cooked onboard." The train is manually turned around in Wakefield on a charming "old turntable" for the trip back, with "musicians entertaining passengers" the whole way. It's a "nice, romantic adventure" reminiscent of train travel's luxurious heyday. Read more.

Jean-Talon Market
Montreal, QC

514.937.7754
The largest outdoor market in North America, Jean-Talon Market leaves no tastebud unturned among its "sprawling maze of vendors," who span an entire city block. Sample fresh produce, local organic meats and game, handmade cheeses, and "the best artisanal ice cream" in Montreal while meandering through "impressive alleys and fascinating crowds." Open 7 days a week, year-round (though the winter weather calls for enclosure), this "off-the-beaten-path" market is a favorite of Montreal residents and offers a "rich, authentic market experience" for food-obsessed (or just hungry) tourists. Toonik Tyme Festival
Iqaluit, NU

867.979.4636
A winner last year, the Toonik Tyme Spring Festival returns as a Local Secret. The Festival takes place each April to celebrate the sun's return to the Great White North, and the ever-welcome thaw that comes along with it. Events include community feasts, Inuit games—such as dog sled races, igloo building, and ice sculpting—as well as some more familiar sports, like ice hockey, and not-so-familiar ones, such as "ice golf." The festival lasts a week and celebrates the "history and native culture" of northern Canada.
