Exploits Valley Salmon Festival
Grand Falls-Windsor, NL

877.585.9762
A "fun, family-oriented festival" held in honor of the migrating Atlantic salmon, this multi-day celebration features "attractions for all age groups." The event, billed as a weekend of "fish and fun while the salmon run," kicks off with a salmon dinner and a "Newfie Night" to showcase the province's traditional food and music. More contemporary music and "big name artists" headline the festival's annual "Splash Concert," and a free family day, culminating with an adults-only wine tasting, offers even more activities that make this "a weekend to enjoy." Christian's Bar
St. John's, NL

709.753.9100
Among the bars lining George Street, cozy Christian's stands out for two equally prestigious reasons: because it is the area's oldest establishment, and because it hosts the "best screech-in in town." In a ceremony that "you cannot beat," visitors become honorary Newfoundlanders by kissing a cod, repeating special phrases, and downing a shot of local Screech rum. For those with more sensitive palates, "it's worth going just to watch," and the bar and its beloved staff are "must-sees for every out-of-town visitor." For a must-taste, try its famous coffee concoctions, with or without Screech. Read more.

Lucy Maud Montgomery Festival
Cavendish, PEI

902.963.2078
Since writing "Anne of Green Gables" in 1908—and 18 other novels set in PEI—L.M. Montgomery has become a local and national icon. Each year, the home of Green Gables celebrates its hometown heroine with a weekend festival. Much like the books and their protagonists, the festival focuses on children of all ages and their families, with readings, dances, performances, and tours—and raspberry cordials for the adults. Each festival ends with a celebratory memorial service for Montgomery at the Green Gables house. Read more.
