The Pizza Cafe
Little Rock
501.664.6133
The "quaint little digs" of this restaurant in the downtown Little Rock area make for a great atmosphere. As well as turning out some of the best pizza in town, according to locals, it’s best when eaten out on the deck with a cold draught beer in hand. The staff of this favorite joint have a keen sense of humor; keep an eye out for the wonderful sign that one local declares "always makes me smile — it says: ’Will Engage In Snappy Repartee For Food.’"

Petit Jean State Park
Morrilton
501.727.5441
An "easy, restful retreat," is how some residents have described Arkansas’s first (and flagship) park that offers several walking trails of different length and difficulties. They are all laid out well on a trail map for easy navigation. If you’re up for the challenge, several of these go to Cedar Falls, a natural waterfall worth the visit. When you’ve worked up an appetite with all that exercise, stop at the park’s wonderful, inexpensive Mather Lodge, which has "a restaurant with lovely views, overlooking the mountains." Read more.
Tammy’s Tamales
Fort Smith
479.783.8045
"They might be the star attraction at this great mom and pop restaurant, but the homemade tamales, made each morning from scratch aren’t the only thing on the menu worth eating!" Tammy’s also serves salads, sandwiches, nachos, and enchiladas and they feature daily blue plate specials that are all worth a try. For something a little different, the fresh sushi on Thursdays hits the mark. It’s so good, it’s worth remembering to call in the morning to reserve your order.

Gelateria Scarpino
Fayetteville
479.409.3772
All-natural hand-crafted gelato is the name of the game at this "secret place," as dubbed by loyal customers to Scarpino’s. "With its local ambiance and inviting feeling, the gelateria serves from-scratch sorbetto, granita, Italian sodas, and one of the best-tasting gelatos this discerning regular has ever had!" If you call ahead and order, Gelateria Scarpino can whip up semifreddo spumoni cakes and dark chocolate custard gelato truffles known as tartuffos, too. Read more.
Turkey Trot
Yellville
870.449.4676
Turkey isn’t just for Thanksgiving, you know. This Turkey Trot, held during the second Friday and Saturday of October, is a community festival that "provides great fun for the whole family." It’s comprised of North central Arkansas’ largest parade, a 5K run (charmingly called the Turkey Trot Trot, but sparing the real thing), a beauty pageant, a turkey calling contest, and a big dinner of (you guessed it) tasty turkey. This shindig was founded in 1946. Beyond Turkey, patrons say it’s great for those with an interest in music, specifically bluegrass music. Read more.
