Dear Amy,
I have a vacation planned to the Caribbean this summer, and I am worried about a storm since I know that's high time for hurricanes. Any advice on what I can do if a disaster strikes?
Please Advise,
June
Hi June,
Should there be a major storm before you've left for your trip you're likely to have options from postponing to canceling. Don't assume that you'll have to go or else. Check with your airline to find out what your options are first, even if you have a non-refundable ticket. Many carriers make exceptions to this rule when severe weather hits. Your hotel is likely to be flexible as well, but again, call to find out your options before making a decision about going.
As always, for extra protection guaranteed, travel insurance is your best bet. Trip delay is usually invoked when bad weather delays your travel for more than six hours. Each travel protection plan differs so make sure the plan fits your needs before you buy.
Another handy tool to check weather delays or other air-related issues is on Rally Caparas' Eye on the Sky updates found at www.travelocity.com/eos where you will see the most up-to-date information about air traffic delays around the country.
If a storm should strike while you're away you may find it handy to have these items in your suitcase: a small battery operated alarm clock and radio, a pocket flashlight, an emergency cash stash, a power bar or two, and an extra book.
I know a couple who loves to travel during hurricane season because there are great deals. Last year they got an extra two days on their cruise ship and were very happy! Not everyone feels that way, but at least you're a bit more informed about traveling during hurricane season now.

Dear Amy,
We're going to Arizona and are planning mostly outdoor activities. What does the typical airline charge for traveling with golf clubs, water skis or bikes?
Best,
Laura
Hi Laura,
Summer travel often involves sporting equipment, and since the airlines have gotten more stringent on their baggage allowances it's good to know the policies ahead of time.
Here are a few common guidelines for you as you get ready to pack your sporting equipment. The most common sports items (golf clubs and skis) can be packed and stowed with the checked luggage; however each item will count as one of your checked bags. Remember that some over weight and over-sized pieces will be charged. As will items such as a non-motorized bicycle, scuba tank or surfboard all costing about $80.
With most airlines, items that are larger than 115 linear inches and 100 lbs. will not be accepted as checked baggage and you should contact the airline's cargo department if you still opt to ship your own equipment. (Additional charges may apply for international travel.)
As always, check with the airline you're flying on to verify policies regarding baggage. Most of this information can be found on the airline's Web site. And for more travel tips and advice, visit my column at www.travelocity.com/atoz.

Dear Amy,
I am looking to plan a family trip to the beach for a week and have a 13 year old daughter and 17 year old son. Can you send me a list of beaches that would be conducive to a fun vacation with the whole family?
Thanks so much!
JBH
Hi JBH,
Whoever says water+sand= a beach couldn't be more wrong! From romance to action, every beach offers something different. I spent much of my childhood on the beaches of New England, and let me tell you that more than just the scenery changes from the east coast to the west.
Some of my favorite family-oriented beach destinations include Destin, Fla., Newport Beach, Calif., Bethany Beach, Del. and Paradise Island, Bahamas. These destinations offer endless activities for the kids, as well as relaxation for the adults. Read more about my top picks family beaches.
If your family enjoys action-packed activities, I'd recommend Venice Beach in Los Angeles, Waikiki in Honolulu or Magen's Bay in St. Thomas. These beaches are among the most popular (and most crowded), but the fun never stops! Read more.
Hope this helps you choose a family beach destination for you all to enjoy.
Happy Travels,
Amy
